Pathways to Third Level Education and Supports Available for Students with Care Experience

This IFCA Information Webinar took place 20th January 2025 in collaboration with University of Galway’s Access Centre Outreach Team:

Promoting and supporting opportunities for care experienced young people who wish to progress to third level education is essential in recognising their gifts, individuality and potential.

This informative webinar explores various Pathways to Third Level/University, detailing the different entry routes available, such as:

  • Access Courses;
  • Further Education and Training (FET);
  • Central Applications Office (CAO);
  • HEAR (Higher Education Access Route) and DARE (Disability Access Route to Education) entry schemes.

The webinar also provides valuable insights into preparing for third level/university life, emphasizing the importance of:

  • Selecting the right course;
  • Understanding accommodation timelines;
  •  Reaching out to Access Centres for support;
  • Managing key deadlines for funding and applications.

The webinar highlights the range of supports available to students at third level including:

  • Academic and financial assistance;
  • A dedicated contact for students with care experience;
  • Advice on fostering a sense of community.

In addition, Betty Attwood shares her expertise, offering practical advice and lessons learned from her role supporting students at the University of Galway. She also relays valuable tips and insights from students she has worked with, providing a well-rounded perspective to help participants embark on their third level/university journey with confidence.
