Policy and Advocacy

In IFCA, we are uniquely placed to see the impact of policies on children in care, their foster carers and on the fostering community in general.  We advocate to promote positive change in foster care through supporting foster carers in their role of caring for children in foster care.

Policy and Advocacy

Through our National Helpline and National Advocacy services we gather feedback about the impact of such policies through our working relationships with the foster care community and partnerships. We work closely with the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, Tusla-Child and Family Agency, and HIQA to contribute to policy development in the area of foster care and to monitor policy impact on foster care.

Practice

IFCA conducts research into areas of practice in foster care which contribute to collective learning and the promotion of best practice in foster care. Through our National Helpline and National Advocacy services we obtain feedback from foster carers and children in foster care as to how policies impact upon them.

This information is shared with our partners in Tusla—Child and Family Agency and the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, to promote excellence in foster care. We publish two issues of Foster journal annually. The journal invites submissions from authors representing a broad field of research into practice in foster care. This learning is also shared with the fostering community at our annual national conference and through other learning events throughout the year. IFCA’s contribution to practice guidance is (here).
