Issue 6 – Navigating the system – part two

Foster journal, Issue six (2018), is titled Navigating the System—part two. It picks up where part one left off in providing practical information about navigating the statutory and organisational systems encountered in the course of fostering.

Fidelma Guinan of EPIC (Empowering People in Care) offers information on how to support young people in care regarding their sexual orientation and gender identity, and Julie Ahern of the Children’s Rights Alliance writes about the organisation’s Access to Justice Initiative.

Foster carers interface with the many requirements of the care system. Articles by Fiona Lane and IFCA’s Andrew Murphy and Peter O’Toole offer insights and information on, respectively, foster carer reviews, financial considerations and questions, and accessing counselling.

Young people may face considerable challenges as they move from the care environment into independent living. Aideen O’Brien contributes a comprehensive overview of this complex area and explains how foster carers can help to facilitate young people in care to develop the life skills they will need as they transition to independent living.
