The Irish Foster Care Association (IFCA) has taken a significant step towards highlighting the challenges faced by foster carers by engaging directly with the Cathaoirleach of every County Council in Ireland. This move is part of IFCA’s national campaign to raise awareness about the plight of foster carers and to advocate for increased support.
As part of our ongoing political engagement at a regional level, IFCA has submitted a motion to each County Council detailing the key areas where support is urgently required for foster carers. These motions are scheduled to go before a vote of elected members, and if successful, the respective councils will write to the Minister for Children, urging for enhanced supports and resources for foster carers.
The response from County Councils has been encouraging, with many expressing their willingness to address the needs of foster carers in their communities. Moreover, a number of councils have generously agreed to host delegations from local foster care families, providing them with a platform to share their first-hand experiences and shed light on the challenges they face daily.
IFCA is grateful for the unanimous support shown by the members of Monaghan County Council, especially Cllr Sean Conlon, during the recent vote. This positive outcome exemplifies the commitment and dedication of elected representatives to improve the circumstances of foster carers in their respective regions. Similar motions are currently under consideration by all County Councils and will be raised between now and mid-September, just ahead of Budget 2024.
The overwhelming support demonstrated by elected members in Co Monaghan, representing all political parties, will be a significant morale boost for foster carers throughout Ireland. IFCA believes that this united effort will bring attention to the urgent need for increased supports, resources, and recognition for foster carers who play a crucial role in the lives of vulnerable children and families nationwide.
