May 23rd 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Recognising and supporting the birth children of foster carers in the fostering process:

Messages, Challenges and Opportunities.

23rd May 10.00 a.m. to 12.00, Woodford Dolmen Hotel, Carlow

Organised by Carlow/Kilkenny IFCA Branch.

Presented by Sarah O’Donohue (Birth Child of Foster Carers) and Dave Williams (Social Care Department, Dublin Institute of Technology

The topic of the experience of birth children within foster families has received little attention in comparison to other issues in fostering. Sarah and Dave originally presented this workshop at the IFCA Conference last year and the branch committee is very delighted that we have been able to arrange for them to visit the branch. This interactive, participatory workshop will provide a dynamic and safe space to examine the important topic of listening to and supporting the birth children of foster carers as a key factor in the promotion of successful placements for children in foster care. The workshop draws on the most recent research as well as hearing a frank and open account of a young person’s experience of being part of a foster family.

Sarah is a birth child of foster carers who have been fostering for almost 20 years.  During this time Sarah has encountered over 50 foster siblings, from emergency placements to long term.  She is 24 years old, lives in Dublin and is currently undertaking a Master in Counselling and Psychotherapy. Dave has worked in the areas of residential child care, management and social care education for over 20 years and currently lectures on social care programmes at the Dublin Institute of Technology. He recently complete his doctoral research on the experiences of birth children of foster carers and has presented conference papers nationally and internationally on the topic of supporting foster carers’ birth children.
